Motability is a charity that aims to provide disabled people with access to a car by using some, or all, of the Higher Rate Mobility Component of their Disability Living Allowance (DLA).
The most popular funding option is to take out a leasing agreement with Motability. When choosing this option, you may pay an initial rental, then the agreed amout of your allowance is used for 36 months to provide you with a car, inclusive of insurance, servicing, road tax and breakdown cover. Please note that extra charges apply to if you drive more than 60,000 miles in the car.
Another option is to use your allowance to fund a hire purchase agreement through Motability to purchase the new or used car of your choice. This is similar to a standard loan you might get from the bank, and is for a period of 2 to 5 years. These hire purchase agreements can be suited to people doing high mileages as there are no penalties for this, however it does not include the insurance, servicing or other items that you get with a lease.
If you currently receive the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement, this also entitles you to a car under the Motability scheme using either of the options above.
